Sculptra vs Dermal Filler vs Ellansé

Which Injectable Treatment Is Right for Your Face?

When patients research facial rejuvenation, three names often come up:

Sculptra

Dermal Fillers

Ellansé

Which treatment is appropriate for my face and my goals?

At Monette Ansley Clinic, Dr Adam assesses the patient's facial structure, skin, volume, ageing pattern and aesthetic objectives before recommending an appropriate treatment strategy.

WHAT IS SCULPTRA?

Sculptra Is a Collagen-Stimulating Injectable

Sculptra contains poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA).

Rather than relying primarily on immediate filling, Sculptra is designed to stimulate collagen production.

The resulting improvement develops progressively.

This makes Sculptra particularly interesting for patients who prefer a more gradual approach to facial rejuvenation.

Think:

Stimulate → Build → Gradually Rejuvenate

rather than simply:

Inject → Fill → Immediate volume

Sculptra is not appropriate for every patient, and treatment should be individually planned.

WHAT IS DERMAL FILLER?

"Dermal filler" is not one single product.

There are different types of dermal fillers, with different materials and characteristics.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers are among the most commonly used.

Depending on the specific product, dermal fillers can be used for:

Lip enhancement

Facial volume

Cheek enhancement

Chin projection

Jawline contouring

Nasolabial folds

Facial contouring

Other indications

One major advantage of many HA fillers is that their effect can be seen relatively quickly after treatment.

Filler is often about strategically adding or restoring volume.

WHAT IS ELLANSÉ?

Ellansé Is Different From Both HA Filler and Sculptra

Ellansé is based on polycaprolactone (PCL) microspheres suspended in a gel carrier.

It has both:

Immediate volumising characteristics

and

Collagen-stimulating properties.

This makes it different from traditional HA filler and also different from Sculptra.

However, Ellansé products and availability can vary by market, and patients should discuss the specific product, regulatory status and indications with their doctor.

WHO MAY CONSIDER SCULPTRA?

Sculptra may be considered by adults who are concerned about gradual changes associated with facial ageing, including:

Loss of facial volume

Reduced facial fullness

Changes in facial contours

Skin quality concerns

Loss of youthful facial appearance

Early signs of facial ageing

Progressive facial volume changes

However, not everyone is a suitable candidate.

A medical assessment is necessary to determine whether Sculptra is appropriate.

SCULPTRA VS DERMAL FILLER

What Is the Main Difference?

The biggest conceptual difference is the way they create their aesthetic effect.

Sculptra

Primarily works through collagen stimulation and progressive tissue change.

Dermal filler

Many commonly used fillers primarily provide immediate volume and contour correction.

Therefore:

Sculptra = gradual collagen-focused rejuvenation

Filler = immediate volume/contour-focused correction

This is a simplified comparison, because individual filler products can have different properties.

SCULPTRA VS ELLANSÉ

Both Can Stimulate Collagen — But They Are Not the Same

This is an important distinction.

Both Sculptra and Ellansé can be associated with collagen stimulation, but they use different materials.

Sculptra

Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA)

Ellansé

Polycaprolactone (PCL)

Their mechanisms, product characteristics, indications and treatment protocols are different.

Therefore, it would be inaccurate to say:

"They are basically the same."

They are not.

WHICH ONE LASTS LONGER?

Longevity Depends on the Product and the Patient

This is one of the most searched questions.

But there is no single universal answer.

Longevity can depend on:

Product

Treatment area

Amount used

Patient metabolism

Facial movement

Treatment technique

Individual biological response

Therefore, avoid comparing treatments using a single "X years" claim.

A longer-lasting treatment is not automatically a better treatment.

The correct question is:

Is the longevity appropriate for the patient's treatment goal?

WHICH ONE LOOKS MORE NATURAL?

Natural Results Depend on More Than the Product

A common misconception is that one product automatically produces a more natural result.

In reality, appearance can depend on:

Patient selection

Facial anatomy

Injection technique

Treatment area

Quantity

Treatment planning

Product characteristics

Doctor experience

The same product can produce very different results in different hands.

DR ADAM'S APPROACH

Don't Start With the Product. Start With the Face.

When assessing a patient, Dr Adam considers:

Facial Structure

What is the underlying facial architecture?

Volume

Where has facial volume changed?

Skin

What is happening to skin quality?

Contours

Where have facial contours changed?

Folds and Shadows

What is creating the patient's visible concerns?

Treatment Goal

What does the patient actually want to improve?

Only then can an appropriate treatment strategy be considered.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is Sculptra better than dermal filler?

Not universally. Sculptra and dermal fillers work differently and may be suitable for different treatment goals.

Is Sculptra better than Ellansé?

Neither is universally better. They use different materials and have different treatment characteristics.

Which is better for mature skin: Sculptra or filler?

It depends on what has changed in the patient's face. Some patients may benefit from Sculptra, some from filler and some from another approach.

Which lasts longer, Sculptra or Ellansé?

Longevity depends on the specific product, treatment area and individual patient. It is better to compare the specific products being considered rather than assume one duration applies to every patient.

Which gives faster results?

Many dermal fillers and Ellansé provide an immediate volumising effect. Sculptra's collagen-stimulating effects develop progressively.

Can Sculptra be dissolved?

Sculptra cannot simply be dissolved with hyaluronidase in the same way as a hyaluronic-acid filler.

Can Ellansé be dissolved?

Ellansé is not a hyaluronic-acid filler and cannot be dissolved with hyaluronidase in the same way as HA filler.

Can I combine Sculptra and filler?

Some patients may be candidates for a treatment plan involving different injectable treatments. Whether they should be combined depends on the individual patient, treatment areas and clinical circumstances.

Can men have Sculptra, filler or Ellansé?

Yes, suitable male patients may be considered for these treatments. Treatment should respect male facial proportions and individual aesthetic goals.

Which is best for facial ageing?

There is no universal best injectable treatment. Facial ageing is different for every patient.

Which treatment looks the most natural?

Natural-looking results depend on patient selection, product choice, treatment planning, technique and quantity—not simply the product name.

Which treatment is safest?

All injectable treatments have potential risks. Safety depends on appropriate patient selection, product choice, technique and medical management.

Is Sculptra a filler?

Sculptra is an injectable poly-L-lactic acid treatment designed to stimulate collagen. It should not simply be considered interchangeable with conventional dermal fillers.

Is Ellansé a filler?

Ellansé is an injectable based on polycaprolactone microspheres in a gel carrier and has both volumising and collagen-stimulating characteristics.
